Exploring Olympos and Chimaera: The Eternal Flames of Antalya

If you drive about an hour and a half west of Antalya city, past the massive resorts of Kemer, the landscape begins to change. The Taurus Mountains drop sharply into the sea, the pine forests become incredibly dense, and the atmosphere shifts from "luxury holiday" to "ancient adventure."

1. The Ancient City of Olympos

Olympos was once a wildly prosperous Lycian city, and later, a notorious stronghold for Mediterranean pirates.

Today, it is one of the most unique archaeological sites in Turkey because it has not been heavily excavated or sanitized. The ruins of Roman temples, Byzantine churches, and ancient theaters are completely overgrown with wild vines and fig trees. Walking through the ruins feels like you are discovering a lost city in a jungle.

A freshwater river flows directly through the center of the ancient city, leading you out onto Olympos Beach—a stunning pebble beach nestled in a deep valley between two massive mountains.

2. The Hippie Vibe and Treehouses

Because traditional concrete hotels are banned here, the local accommodation consists entirely of wooden bungalows and famous "Treehouses." Just a short drive from Olympos, near the village of Çıralı, lies one of the most fascinating natural phenomena in the world: Mount Chimaera (known locally as Yanartaş, or "Burning Stone").

According to Greek mythology, the Chimaera was a terrifying, fire-breathing monster—part lion, part goat, and part snake. The hero Bellerophon, riding the winged horse Pegasus, famously slew the beast by driving a lead-tipped spear into its mouth, burying the monster deep underground where its fiery breath continues to escape to this day.

The Scientific Reality: In reality, geological research confirms that the flames are fueled by an 87% methane gas composition continuously venting through fractured serpentinite rock. These natural fires have been burning uninterrupted for more than 2,500 years (recorded since at least 1,000 BC by ancient Lycian and Greek writers). In ancient times, they were so bright that sailors used them as a natural lighthouse to navigate the treacherous coastline.

How to Visit: Visiting Chimaera requires climbing a 1,200-meter (0.75-mile) uneven stone trail with an elevation gain of 250 vertical meters, taking an average of 25 to 35 minutes of moderate uphill walking. It is best to reach the summit 20 to 30 minutes after sunset (between 19:30 and 21:00 in summer) when the flames provide maximum contrast against the dusky pine forest.

Local Tip: Do what the locals do! Bring a stick, some marshmallows, or even sausages, and roast them directly over the ancient, mythical fire.
